ROYAL MAIL – DINASAUR STAMPS
To commemorate the centenary of the publication of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, Royal Mail commissioned a set of dinosaur stamps. Dinosaur illustrator Bob Nicholls was engaged to create the artwork, with the concept featuring the creatures breaking beyond the traditional frame of the stamp – something Royal Mail had only done once before. The final designs were ultimately not selected, with the illustration style considered too frightening for the intended audience. The project nevertheless provided an opportunity to explore an unusually ambitious approach to stamp design.
